Astronomy and Space

Astronomy is one of the oldest branches of science.

It fascinated humans from the earliest times. Using telescopes and satellites people observe the skies, as well as theoretical and simulation work.

Astronomy and Space Science.

Astronomers study how the Universe began and evolved to its present state, how galaxies form and why our solar system looks as it does. Astronomers and space scientists at the universities around the world are one of the world’s best, working on answers to these and other questions identified in science challenges.

This artist's impression shows the view from the surface of one of the planets in the TRAPPIST-1 system. At least seven planets orbit this ultracool dwarf star 40 light-years from Earth and they are all roughly the...
Simulations of the cosmic web. The filaments connecting structures are shown. Such structures are predicted by numerical simulations of matter distribution in the universe at different times through the age of the universe. Credit: UC Riverside The scaffolding that...
By using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, astronomers have found that the varying glow of brown dwarfs over time can be explained by bands of patchy clouds rotating at different speeds. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech Dim objects called brown dwarfs, less massive...
This cartoon shows how gas falling into distant starburst galaxies ends up in vast turbulent reservoirs of cool gas extending 30 000 light-years from the central regions. ALMA has been used to detect these turbulent reservoirs of...
This image shows the recovered nova of March 11, 1437 and its ejected shell. It was taken with the Carnegie SWOPE 1-meter telescope in Chile using a filter that highlights the hot hydrogen gas of the shell....
Astronomers observed the magnetic field of a galaxy five billion light-years away. The galaxy provides important insight into how magnetism in the universe formed and evolved. Credit: Bill Saxton, NRAO/AUI/NSF; NASA, Hubble Heritage Team, (STScI/AURA), ESA, S. Beckwith...
Scientists have detected the first X-rays from what appears to be a type Ia supernova, located inside the spiral-shaped galaxy ESO 336-G009, about 260 million light-years from Earth. Credit: Vikram Dwarkadas/Digitized Sky Survey Exploding stars lit the way for...
Astronauts could someday benefit from recycling human waste on long space trips (photo illustration). Credit: American Chemical Society Imagine you're on your way to Mars, and you lose a...
The central region of the Perseus galaxy cluster. The mosaic image is composed of many "tiles" of long-exposure images taken with the 4.2 metre William Herschel Telescope on the island of La Palma. Ultra-diffuse galaxies...
Illustration shows a likely configuration of a gravitational lensing system discovered by OVRO. The 'milli-lens' is located in or near the intervening spiral galaxy. The lens is magnifying blobs of jet material within the active galaxy PKS1413+135, but the...
This artist's concept illustrates an asteroid belt around the bright star Vega. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech Astronomers have discovered what appears to be a large asteroid belt around the star Vega, the second brightest star in northern night skies. The scientists used data...
