Astronomy and Space

Astronomy is one of the oldest branches of science.

It fascinated humans from the earliest times. Using telescopes and satellites people observe the skies, as well as theoretical and simulation work.

Astronomy and Space Science.

Astronomers study how the Universe began and evolved to its present state, how galaxies form and why our solar system looks as it does. Astronomers and space scientists at the universities around the world are one of the world’s best, working on answers to these and other questions identified in science challenges.

Artist's impression of the dust disk and a forming planet around TW Hydrae.Credit: NAOJ A number of extrasolar planets have been found in the past two decades and now researchers agree that planets can have a wide variety of characteristics....
A conceptual rendition of gas being driven into a supermassive black hole following a supernova explosion Strong turbulence caused by supernova explosions inside a dense molecular gas disk in the central region of a galaxy disturbs the stable motion...
Among other data, scientists used the galaxies visible in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) to recalculate the total number of galaxies in the observable Universe. The image was taken by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope and covers...
Temporal ratio image formed from two LROC Narrow Angle Camera images (after image divided by the before image) revealing a new 12 meter (~40 foot) diameter impact crater (Latitude: 36.536°N; Longitude: 12.379°E) formed between 25 October 2012 and 21...
Image shows NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter over the moon; courtesy NASA/GSFC/Arizona State University/Laura Davis. Study reveals surface features younger than assumed; potential structures would need better protection The moon's surface is being "gardened" — churned by small impacts — more than...
The cosmic microwave background over the whole sky, with the unusual 'Cold Spot' feature circled at the lower right. Credit: Image courtesy of University of Portsmouth A team of astrophysicists at the University of Portsmouth have created the largest ever map...
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory researchers have demonstrated for the first time how an asteroid or comet could have caused the mega crater on Phobos without completely destroying the Martian moon.Credit: Image courtesy of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Mars' largest moon...
This image, captured with the VISTA infrared survey telescope, as part of the Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV) ESO public survey, shows the central part of the Milky Way. While normally hidden behind obscuring dust, the infrared capabilities...
An artist's illustration depicts the interior of a low-mass star. Such stars have different interior structures than our Sun, so they are not expected to show magnetic activity cycles. However, astronomers have discovered that the nearby star Proxima Centauri...
Observations with the ALMA telescopes of the gas around the two stars called IRS 43. The colors are shown as an illustration. The gas moves in orbit around the stars, which are highlighted in yellow. The gas that is...
